Statistics
In honor of the National Safety Stand Down, which is happening this week, we at Gallagher Bassett wanted to spread awareness and help employers and professionals in construction discuss safety with their employees.
As we’ve mentioned in the past, safety shouldn’t be left to luck and fall fatalities are one of the highest forms of construction incidents recorded in history.
And those accidents still happen today: Recently a fatal fall occurred at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 351 of the 1,008 construction fatalities recorded in 2020 Bureau of Labor Statistics data. And for every fatality, there’s roughly 600 near misses and ‘almost’ accidents.
For this week, and going onward, any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on “Fall Hazards” and reinforcing the importance of “Fall Prevention”.
