Local Law 196 (LL196) mandates training for construction and demolition workers and supervisors on Site Safety Plan jobs. However, the costs of training employees for smaller businesses may be overwhelming. Recently, the New York City Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner, Gregg Bishop, announced that the office has opened applications for small construction firms to apply for Site Safety Training (SST)-related grants. The new SBS grants are designed to help businesses comply with LL196’s September 1, 2020 deadline by helping to offset the cost of this training.
How it Works
- Businesses may choose from any New York City Department of Buildings (DOB)-approved SST provider to complete their employees’ SST training. Courses provided by Gallagher Bassett are DOB-approved and meet the training requirements under LL196.
- Eligible construction firms may apply for the grant online or obtain more information by dialing 311. Businesses are required to submit their information that demonstrates their eligibility and completion of training with an authorized provider.
- Once reviewed and approved by SBS, the grants will cover a minimum of 65% of the total costs of training and may cover up to 100% of the costs. Reimbursements will be issued AFTER the training has been completed.
“We know that construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in New York City. We also know that many workers die because they do not get adequate safety training, especially at smaller businesses. These grants are not just good for business, but will literally save lives,” said City Council Member Carlos Menchaca via the SBS’s press release.
