While anyone who has had the chance to take our 8HR Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33 course is likely well aware of signage requirements for work sites, a new set of signs will find their way onto projects across the city starting October 15th, 2019.
The new requirement compels general contractors to post worker safety information signs at construction sites where Site Safety Training, or SST, is required.
And, along with some standard size and style requirements
- be 44 inches wide and 30 inches high;
- have letters at least 1 inch (25 mm) high;
- have white letters on a blue background; and
- be made of a durable and weatherproof material such as vinyl, plastic, or aluminum that is flame retardant.
The signs must be clearly visible and posted at each egress point, with sites that have fencing required to post it at each egress point inside of the barriers, while those without construction fencing must ” post a sign at each egress point within the controlled access zone where construction is taking place and at each existing loading dock or location being used for construction delivery or access.”
They must also be written in all the languages used by workers on the site, and, most importantly, they must include specific information about required worker safety training, including training deadlines and the require number of hours.
The service notice from the DOB can be found here, while templates for the signs in a variety of languages can be found here.
