Course Description

This NYC DOB Approved course is offered as an instructor led in-person and actively proctored training. New as of January 1, 2025, under 1 RCNY §104-06, Special Rigger licensees seeking to renew must complete this course and the 8 HR Special Rigger Renewal training course for a total of 16 training hours.  

The purpose of this course is to help supervisors maintain adequate safety discipline on suspended scaffold projects in New York City. During this course, participants will review Federal and NYC DOB scaffold regulations, how to stay in compliance with the most current Suspended Scaffold standards, exchange their experiences and will discuss the most recent changes in the rigging industry.

The instructor will assess students to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, terminating wire rope, building a block and tackle system, and operating scaffold hoist motor and each student will independently complete a multiple-choice final exam.

The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the SST card or Worker Wallet Card as applicable.

Additional Details

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify main scaffold accident prevention methods
  • Assign specific Department of Buildings or OSHA safety rule to given suspended scaffold system
  • Demonstrate practical skills necessary to properly install and maintain fall protection systems used on suspended scaffolds
  • Apply various applications using ropes, knots & hitches, block & tackle and wire rope termination
  • Explain main responsibilities of a suspended scaffold supervisor on a New York City construction project

Prerequisites

This training is appropriate for:

Individuals attending this course must hold an expired or soon to be expired Special Rigger license. Students attending this course must present their original Special Rigger license.

OR

Individuals who have completed the initial 32-Hour Suspended Scaffold Supervisor training course (or the refresher) must take this training every 4 years.

Training Requirements for 8 Hour Suspended Scaffold Supervisor Refresher

As per 3314.4.5.3 of the 2022 NYC Construction Codes, this course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) to continue to supervise suspended scaffold projects on construction sites in NYC.

Additionally, under the 2022 NYC DOB Building Codes, as mandated by 28-404.3.2 of the NYC Administrative Code, Special Rigger License applicants must successfully complete this training and the 16-Hour Special Rigger Training Course within one year prior to application submittal. The courses can be taken in the sequence of your choosing.

100% attendance and active participation in all learning activities including class exercises and the final exam is required. Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the written, multiple- choice examination to be eligible for course completion ID card. This card is valid for 4 years. 

For Special Rigger license holders, the training must be completed within the one (1) year period prior to renewal.  

Students who do not pass the written or practical exam will have one opportunity to retake the entire 8-hour course and retake the exam at a reduced fee of $100. Students must contact Gallagher Bassett to schedule and pay for the class within 6 months following the original class date. 

Make-up time is not typically permitted with this training. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule for the next available program and attend the full training course.
