Course Description
This course is available in-person (on-site) or in a hybrid format where students must first successfully complete a fully online component and schedule a hands-on component to be conducted in-person (on-site).
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) are machines/devices intended for moving persons, tools, and materials to a working position, consisting of at least a work platform with controls, an extending structure, and a chassis. The most common examples of MEWPs include Articulating Boom Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Vertical Lifts.
MEWP is a device that enables access to hard-to-reach places by lifting a platform into the air. These devices give workers temporary access to otherwise inaccessible locations. The devices are easy to use and are typically safer to use than ladders and scaffolds. These devices are usually powered by electricity, gas, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems that power a series of supports, lifting the work platform. The purpose of this training is to provide students with general instructions regarding the inspection, application, and operation of aerial platforms, including recognition and avoidance of hazards associated with their operation. Students will develop the competency needed to operate MEWPs safely while also complying with the laws governing their operation.
The combination of classroom theory training and practical assessment aims to reduce the risks related to MEWP operation by teaching the fundamentals of safe operating procedures.
In order to successfully complete this training, all participants must pass a practical (hands-on) assessment on the specified equipment at the client/employer’s facility.

Training Requirements for Mobile Elevating Work Platform Operator Training
According to OSHA Subpart L, 1926.453(a)(2), “only authorized persons shall operate an aerial lift.” When it comes to aerial lifts, OSHA does not provide the specific training requirements necessary for operators. However, the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) 92.24 Standard does provide the needed training requirements for aerial lifts. ANSI standards are not written into OSHA law; however, a contractor can still be cited for not following them. Under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment “free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.” OSHA can cite contractors as a General Duty Clause violation if not following ANSI standards when they are viewed as the industry’s best practice.
Audience
Individuals who should attend this training course include all employees required to work on Mobile Elevating Work Platforms such as scissor lifts, articulating boom trucks, and vertical lifts.
