Course Description
Introduced in April 2023, this Cranes and Derricks course replaces NYC DOB’s 30-Hour Special Rigger under the 2022 Codes and is now one of two required training courses for Special Rigger License applicants. During the training participants will learn the most current rigging standards and the core management skills needed to be an effective Licensed Special Rigger. The course covers in detail the New York City Construction Codes and OSHA Regulations as it pertains to rigging operations and industry best practices. Students will receive instruction on how to read scaffold design drawings, how to verify the fitness of the rigging crew, properly train workers on related hazards, and how to identify and respond to emergency situations.
The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the identification card or site safety training card as applicable.

Additional Details
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify at least five hazards when working with and around hoisting equipment
- Outline design and permit requirements applicable to the use of scaffolding and hoisting equipment in New York City
- List roles and responsibilities of individuals involved in rigging operations on New York City construction sites
- Read lift and rigging plans
- Explain the basic principles of rigging calculations
- Explain hoisting and rigging equipment inspection procedures
- Discuss how to lift and lower loads on construction sites with respect to public safety and worker safety

- Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form
- Active participation in all class exercises (determined by course instructor)

Prerequisites
While there are no prerequisites to attend this course, it is recommended that students have experience in rigging operations, supervision and use of suspended scaffold systems. Students must be able to verbally communicate with instructor in primary language of the training. An individual pursuing the Special Rigger license must also meet these qualifications.

Training Requirements for Special Rigger
Audience
This course is intended for individuals seeking to apply for the Special Rigger license and supervise sites where hoisting and lowering of articles not exceeding 2,000 lbs. will be performed. It is recommended that students possess experience in rigging operations, supervision and use of suspended scaffold systems.
100% attendance and active participation in all learning activities including class exercises and the final exam is required. Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the written, multiple- choice examination to receive a course completion certificate.
Students who do not pass the written exam will have one opportunity to retake the entire 16-hour course at a reduced fee of $175. Students must contact TSCTA to schedule and pay for the retake class within 6 months following the original class date.
Make-up time is not typically permitted with this training. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule for the next available program and attend the full training course.
