Course Description

New: as of January 1, 2025, under 1 RCNY §104-06, Master Rigger licensees seeking to renew must complete the 16 HR Rigging Supervisor Refresher training and the 8 HR Lift Director Refresher training courses for a total of 24 training hours.

During this 16-hour refresher, students will be provided with an overview of OSHA and DOB policies, procedures, and ASME rigging standards with a special emphasis on supervision and coordination of rigging crews and rigging equipment setup. Some topics will include instructions on how to visually inspect rigging equipment, crane setup, load weight and center of gravity calculations as well as methods of applying proper rigging hitches. Students will participate in hands-on exercises in which they will be responsible for presenting, installing and using various rigging applications.

Hands-on assessment will be made by instructor to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, inspect rigging hardware and apply learned rigging lifting techniques and immediately prior to the end of course students will independently complete a multiple choice final exam.

The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the SST card or Worker Wallet Card as applicable.

Additional Details

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize hazards associated to rigging in construction
  • Inspect rigging equipment in accordance to ASME, OSHA and manufacturer requirements
  • Identify hitch configurations, equipment capacities and basic knots
  • Use rigging equipment and hitches with knowledge of load angle factors, rigging capacities, and load integrity
  • Calculate the weight of the load and find its center of gravity
  • Recognize signaling requirements used during rigging operations

Prerequisites

This training is appropriate for:

Individuals attending this course must hold an expired or soon to be expired Master Rigger license. Students attending this course must present their expiring Master Rigger license.

OR

Individuals who have previously completed a 32-Hour Rigging Supervisor or 16-Hour Rigging Supervisor Refresher within the last 4 years from an approved training provider. Refresher training must be completed every 4 years. The expired or soon to be expired card must be presented prior to the start of the course.

Training Requirements

New as of January 1, 2025, under 1 RCNY §104-06, licensees must have successfully completed this NYC Department-approved course and the 8 HR Lift Director Refresher training Training course for a total of 24 hours of refresher training. All training must be completed in the one (1) year immediately prior to the renewal.

As per 3316.9.2.2 of the 2022 NYC Construction codes, this course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) for individuals, not hired directly by a licensed rigger to maintain his/her designation to supervise the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment.

In accordance to 3314.4.5.9 (Grace Period), individuals who fail to complete the required refresher program or course within any 4 year period, a refresher program or course shall be considered timely if completed within 1 year after the expiration of the last previously completed initial or refresher course. Where more than 1 year has lapsed, such individual shall be required to successfully re-complete the initial training course.

100% attendance and active participation in all learning activities including class exercises and the final exam is required. Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the written, multiple- choice examination to be eligible for course completion ID card. This card is valid for 4 years.

For Master Rigger license holders, the training must be completed within the one (1) year period prior to renewal.

Students who do not pass the written or practical exam will have one opportunity to retake the entire 8-hour course and retake the exam at a reduced fee of $100. Students must contact Gallagher Bassett to schedule and pay for the class within 6 months following the original class date.

Make-up time is not typically permitted with this training. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule for the next available program and attend the full training course.
