Safety Training Courses

New: as of January 1, 2025, under 1 RCNY §104-06, Master Rigger licensees seeking to renew must complete the 16 HR Rigging Supervisor Refresher training and the 8 HR Lift Director Refresher training courses for a total of 24 training hours.

During this 16-hour refresher, students will be provided with an overview of OSHA and DOB policies, procedures, and ASME rigging standards with a special emphasis on supervision and coordination of rigging crews and rigging equipment setup. Some topics will include instructions on how to visually inspect rigging equipment, crane setup, load weight and center of gravity calculations as well as methods of applying proper rigging hitches. Students will participate in hands-on exercises in which they will be responsible for presenting, installing and using various rigging applications.

Hands-on assessment will be made by instructor to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, inspect rigging hardware and apply learned rigging lifting techniques and immediately prior to the end of course students will independently complete a multiple choice final exam.

The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the SST card or Worker Wallet Card as applicable.

Additional topics will include instructions on how to visually inspect rigging equipment, basic crane components, crane setup and methods of applying proper rigging hitches. Students will participate in hands-on exercises in which they will be responsible for presenting, installing and using various rigging applications.

Hands-on assessment will be made by instructor to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, inspect rigging hardware and apply learned rigging lifting techniques. Immediately prior to the end of the course, students will independently participate in a multiple-choice final exam.

Introduced in April 2023, this Cranes and Derricks course replaces NYC DOB’s 30-Hour Special Rigger under the 2022 Codes and is now one of two required training courses for Special Rigger License applicants. During the training participants will learn the most current rigging standards and the core management skills needed to be an effective Licensed Special Rigger. The course covers in detail the New York City Construction Codes and OSHA Regulations as it pertains to rigging operations and industry best practices. Students will receive instruction on how to read scaffold design drawings, how to verify the fitness of the rigging crew, properly train workers on related hazards, and how to identify and respond to emergency situations. 

The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the identification card or site safety training card as applicable.

During this course, participants will learn the most current rigging standards and the core management skills needed to be an effective Licensed Master Rigger. With the use of New York City Construction Codes, OSHA Regulations and industry best practices, participants will learn how to stay in compliance with the most current rigging standards. Material covered during the course will include rigging methods, installation, maintenance, repair and use of rigging hardware and equipment, guidance on how to read scaffold design drawings, how to verify the fitness of the rigging crew, properly train workers on related hazards, and also how to identify and respond to emergency situations, climber/tower crane assembly, jumping, and disassembly, critical picks, Suspended scaffolds, fall protection and more.

The course will also include a hands-on portion where the instructor will determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, terminating wire rope, building a block, effectively installing fall protection systems, and inspecting/maintaining different types of scaffold hoist motors.

The course fee does not include the cost of issuing the identification card or site safety training card as applicable.

This training has been retired at the direction of NYC DOB. As of 2023, as mandated by 28-404.3.2 of the NYC Administrative Code, Special Rigger License candidates much complete the 16-Hour Special Rigger Course and 32-Hour Suspended Scaffold Supervisor Training Course within one year prior to application submittal. The courses can be taken in the sequence of your choosing.
